Year 9's - freaking out

This year, for the Year 9 sketchup segment, I though it might be a good idea to introduce the idea of a "Group". This is done when a drawing / model is made on Sketchup, you select everything and make it into a group. This way, you can move the group around, and not worry about accidentally deleting walls and bits and pieces you don't need / want to delete.

The only banger is, when you have created a group, you cannot easily edit the group. You need to double click the group to 'get inside' it, and then it can be edited - adding windows / doors etc.

I have not had many warm up lessons with the Year 9's, and they are currently working on creating their own model on the computer of their own container home. I started off showing them how to make a container group - which they did very well - and then got them to move their containers into position after they had created what they needed. For 2x lessons now, the kids have been struggling to create the windows and doors they need for the container house, and in effect, have not been enjoying the programme.

It is extra hard when this happens, becuase I worry about the numbers for the subject when kids don't like it. Overall they have been working well in the class, and it is a good idea to leave them with a nice feeling in the subject so that they take it again - otherwise, there will not be enough classes for a full time DVC teacher next year. The other problem - which I now no - is that I am aiming my expectations waay to high again. It will be good for the next option rotation becuase now I know what NOT to do, but also, not good for this current option as they are going to leave thinking it is too hard, and I blame myself for that.

Overall, a good way to learn, and as soon as I went around and 'Exploded' (ungrouped) their models, they started to move ahead alot better.

AHH!
