With a nice trip to Auckland and a delicious spanish coffee to start the day with, my friend from teachers college and I went to AUT to attend the Design Speaks conference set up by Allistar Gilbert.
What a fabulous day. Not only were Gordon Harris reps in the AUT foyer with mountains of beautifully designed books showcasing all facets of the design industry, but the speakers who presented were engaging and relevant.
The highlights included Nat Cheshire, from Cheshire architects, whose poetic script made for an emotive journey into his mind. Responsible for the creation of Britomart and the emerging Parnell dingin scene, Nat Cheshire is leading Auckland City into a finely sculptured dining era that everybody should be excited about.
Next, Fisher and Paykel delivered a precise record of their product design process. I was pleased to see that the process we are teaching from NCEA is actually a watered down version of industry practice - we are on the right track.
As a Technology and DVC teacher it is VERY important to stay connected to the industry that we are setting our students up to work in, and attending conferences like this one is a positive step towards doing so.
