A bit of Rude chatter

Situation: Student A was getting a bit arrogant in a few of my lessons. As a year 13 I thought that with some gentle nudges and jollying along he would come right. He did not!

The lesson where this event occured started with Student A speking loudly about Penis type things. He was shouting about and did not seem concerned that there were younger students in the class or that his talk was offensive. I gave him a warning and explained why it was innapropriate. I told him if this happened again he would earn a blue slip (the removal from class slip for seniors). He apologised.

I left and returned to the class and saw that he was on youtube watching a video with the words "anal retnetion" in the title. As I approached and inquired about this he declared that he had clicked on a link and was not sure what it would lead to (lies!) and promised me that it was a genuine mistake. I gave him the benefit of the doubt and reminded him that he was already on thin ice and ought to be careful.

Teacher B and I spoke soon after this. I asked him if he would take a senior student into his class as I was sure that Student A would strike again with his filthy ways. Teacher B said "Yes! Send him through to sweep the floor in front of the Year 9's."

Just like clockwork as I re-entered the class (blue slip filled out and ready in my pocket) Student A was winding up talking loudly about Anal Sex, Beads and a whole array of other crap. I gave him the slip and he looked disbelievingly at me.

I told him to go to Teacher B's class. Student A told me no and left the room after rippling up the blue slip and putting it into the rubbish.

Student A, myself and the DP had a meeting the following day to discuss the previous days event. After the discussion (with an apology) Student B came back to my class and did some slave labour cleaning.

The next lesson Student B was Mr. Polite.

This event really highlighted the importance of classroom management and discipline to provide a safe classroom. Student A's actions were bringing in a threatening verbal aspect to the classroom and it had to be dealt with. It was a hard situation for myself as I do not like handing out serious consequences but when a situation is getting to the stage that this was getting to - after many warnings - it is imperative that it be removed to keep the classroom safe.

*Phew. Being an adult is craycray!

Year 9's - freaking out

This year, for the Year 9 sketchup segment, I though it might be a good idea to introduce the idea of a "Group". This is done when a...
