HOLY SHAMOLIE this man was amazing.
Insperation.
This was the first of the 2-part workshop series that Paul Bardot hosted in his classroom (no food in the classroom please) at Long Bay College, Northshore, Auckland.
For this workshop, Paul focused on the 2 Level 1 instrumental standards for DVC - Orthographic Drawing and Paraline Drawing.
He showed us how easy it is to get excellence. The live demonstration while we worked to keep up on the worksheets was amazing. He uses a visualizer which now seems to be the way to go. After experiencing the atmosphere, method and interaction that this tool provides as a leanring tool I WANT ONE!
Paul provided us with the worksheets he uses with his students, and while we were doing these worksheets, treated us as he would his own High School Students. His methods were lovely.
Some of the aspects that I would like to utilise in my classroom:
- Paul would not start the demonstration until he had our full attention and saw that our pencils were down (students were expected to fold their arms as well).
- He uses the method of demonstration follwed by the students then doing what he showed them.
- Paul rips up work that is not good enough
- The workstations were amazing! There was space for the students to put their things, the drawing boards could easily be put away allowing for a free bench space when needed.
- Pencils were ALWAYS required to be sharp.
- Paul teaches the skill and then expects that skill applied to the students own work. So often, an instrumental drawing would take a few weeks. For example: Paul would teach the following skills and then get the students to apply it to their work. Name Block, Lettering, Line thickness (2H vs. HB), Setting up the Orthogrpahic page (measuring and drawing blocks with projection lines), Sectioning and cross hatching methods, using the compass.
- Using a Compass to scratch a 3mm line down the edge of the clear side so that this could be used as cross hatching for sectioning so handy!
Overall an amazing and invaluable day, I cannot wait for the next one! The main message I took away was that I need many, many more resources and that Year 9 + 10 is the time to fill them with skills. Projects are when the skills are utilised in the senior years, but without the skills in the first place, the students will struggle in the senior school.
Much work to do.
