Year 9 frustration - Pt. 2

The year nines and I have now been together for 2 weeks. This last Friday was intense. FIRST, the students followed the normal procedure for coming into the class (line up, listen quietly for the role) and they were issued instructions to write their names up on the board in a list once their work had been approved by me.
So, the list was good to strart with, and then it went nuts. People were erasing names off the list, and putting their names in the newly cleared spot. Peoples names were removed, others added / edited. Chaos. So now, I will write the list and designate the order. I had hoped that they would be trustworthy / independant enough to run a list on their own.
Then, I had to leave the class - as per normal because this subject runs over two classrooms - and the students went wild. I came back in and the teacher from next door had to come in and yell at then to be quiet and get their work done.
Man I felt stink.
I came back to class and was appalled at the lack of focus and spastic behaviour.
REFLECTION: For the next lesson, the students will have the list written for them on the board, their names in alphabetical order. I will get them all to load up the programme worksheets as soon as the lesson begins, and explain the rules yet again, with patience.
When ever I leave the class, we will revise the behaviour expected, and I will offer them a consequence if the specified bechaviour is not followed.
Lets see how this goes.
