So, back to the year nines.
I have learnt alot from their two little projects we have done together this year so far. My idea was to start that they needed to have independence and freedom with their learning. That they would thrive when offered and open ended brief. That when asked to use their imaginations they would go nuts and create amazing ideas. AND that after all that they would know how to use their problme solving to figure out how to make the idea that they had dreamt up.
Overall I was quite disapointed and grumpy at myself at the end of the project for thinking these things. What I found happened was that the students:
a) Got very confused and lost when trying to bumble their way through the technological process
b) Students were off task and oftne did not know that they were doing
c) Students seemed to take far too long to get work done
d) Students lost motivation and needed directing very often
In response I will:
a) Take a guided approach to the students learning. I will guide them through the design process, step by step. ie: we may spend one day as a class on research, one day on concepts, one day on corel etc. I will start each lesson with a tutorial on what we are doing and why we are doing it.
b) The guided approach will ensure that students are clear on what they are doing. It may also be a nice idea to have a part of their slides where they answer: Why do we need the concept stage? Why do we need the research stage etc.
c) Time will be better managed with the heavier guidance
d) As above. I will do this new method next process and see how it goes.
