Today was such a good lesson!

After all of the crappy lessons and the yelling and the frustration and the hurt, this lesson the students were engaged and happy and working and awesome!! The output was slow - but that seems to be a theme. The context is that the students are working on a furniture design brief and are working on their concepts. There is a real lack of their skills in taking insperation from random things, so we are working on that skill here.

The students were given a sheet that had pictures of boats at the top, and pictures of furniture below the boats. The students were given fifteen minutes to draw abstract shapes from the boat section and fifteen minutes to draw from the furniture section. This worked a treat!

At first they were sceptical about the task, but suprisingly the students changed their tunes and came around to the idea and actually started to produce some great results.

I would put their sucsess down to the fact that:

- I was doing the exercises with them on the board to demonstrate to them what I needed from them

- There was no pressure on them

- The imagery was provided for them

- The students had tasks to complete in set time alotments

- it was new and exciting
