Good helpful meeting. Since we are starting the year all the same (via. a tech intro course). we have discussed this method to make sure we are on the right page.

Overview of meeting:

Day 1 2016 Our first Meeting Friday 29th January

Welcome back, Yay, we all made it back and there are no newbies. I have to leave at 1.45 so I hope you get a chance to read this before our scheduled meeting.

Y9

All students will begin with a short baseline survey. We can change and alter this today if necessary i have shared it with you so have a look and say what you think.

The Data we are collecting is related to the students ability to:

read, understand and write answers to questions (comprehension), how good they are at basic 2D and 3D sketching, can they add and subtract at a basic level and do they understand anything about measurement. Do not assist them, tell them it’s a test.

Can you please go through the results when the students have completed it and identify any obvious gaps in student knowledge and let me know via email. I would like a general profile of the class. This will also be useful when we are involved in the literacy meetings to do with our class.

The beginning units the intro and the wallet unit are designed to ensure all students are getting the same background introduction to Technology. The first two units are “online” however we may have to have a printed version as well because we do not all have access to computers. We will look thru this today if you can see errors please let me know and I will make changes where necessary and have a master done by Monday I hope.

The Wallet unit - discuss, will we do it? - some rolls of tape are ready to go, I’ll get more if necessary.

Check the scheme document, It’s in the tech folder in the 2014 folder. Get back to me with any ideas for inclusion or missing information.

Is there anything you need? a plastic bin? pencils? glue sticks etc.let me know and I will do a bulk order Friday.

Safety

Please read section 9 about safety here http://technology.tki.org.nz/Technology-in-the-NZC/Safety-in-Technology-Education/Section-9-Safety-in-technology-for-resistant-materials-and-textiles

It’s probably a good idea to read the whole Safety in Education document, don’t be too scared but be prepared.

Units of work

Collection and retention of student work;

The large book is here if you want to use it as a teaching resource. The book with answers is around

The work each student does has to move with them, to the next rotation teacher and then to their y10 teachers so you keep it .

Presentation Options:

A Teacher generated workbook (folded and stapled on the copier) or an online production.

Both are to be saved on the network so they are easily retained as evidence of meeting different students or class needs and they are available for Parents or anyone else can see what has been done by the student and the student can easily see what has or hasn’t been completed.

No Graffitti on the cover.

Staff new and cunning ideas:

If you design a worksheet or brief please save it on the network in the Y9 folder in the 2016 folder so we all may use it to improve the work given to all the students. If you are using someone else’s material check with them about using it, they may have updates or they may be planning to use it with the same group later in the year. Worksheets and other work presented to students must be of the highest quality.

Tuesday - We will have Y9 students for P5 - we will complete the orientation booklet with them, if they have completed to booklet by the time they get to us we will do some technology with them.

Student work 2016

The reason for retaining their work is so the students, their parents or caregivers and we can see what they have done and the students can see the work is related no matter what “specialist area” they are working in. I hope it will be a way of seeing and therefore being able to measure value added and inter do some interdisciplinary moderation and also so a parent or any other interested party can see what students doing and what and how they are achieving..

The work students do at year 9 goes with them into Y10

Planning

There is a planner on the technology folder on the network designed some time ago. Please use this to plan your units and save it in your folder on the network. All units of work must have unit plans and be complete and on the network by the end of week 6/7 or whenever you can…. Sara also has a planner we could use.

Assessment

Please use the SOLO taxonomy. The descriptors are a direct link from the indicators of progression in the support document. We will need to discuss what merit and excellence will look like and then this can be transferred to your area of work. It was part of a school wide trial iniative to adopt a single method of measuring student achievement across subjects/learning areas. You may need to link it to what the students are doing in your discipline.

We have common assessment tasks – “The Wallet” and “Activities week” units. We will look at the design of the assessment for the “wallet” unit and see how we can align it with the SOLO taxonomy. and then use it to see if there has been improvement in student learning in the” Activities week” unit.

Y10 – I will be teaching Y10 students as part of the module rotation. This work and the “Wood and Metal” Alan and Myself, these options need to have clear links to the curriculum AO”s and have student information with a similar layout to NCEA briefs. The planning should also show the link with tools for work and BCATS.

This year we will have a piece of technology or any cool idea each week to discuss (attributes) with our Y9’s. A picture or link from the net or an actual artifact.

Y11, 12 &13 Level 1,2 & 3

2013 please put all student work in the drawers in the office especially grade boundary work ASAP. Keep any good exemplar work. we will:

Report on the successes and failures of our students last year in NCEA (externals) and document how you/we are going to change/fix that for 2014. I will include this in the subject report.

Look at the units and standards we will be assessing student work against this year and based on the results decide what we are going to change. (by week 3?).

Set up the template/exemplar so that no matter where the unit is being taught the structure of the student information layout and and the marking schedule will look similar/the same.

Have all students complete a unit which will be assessed against an external standard, possibly the same one. How did they go in 2014?

Please save and share your material on the network If you have or see any great ideas please share them, we all, students included, benefit.

Please keep a record or have the senior students keep a good record of the progress of their work with photos or video, especially those students who are achieving at a merit or excellence level and keep me informed.

Moderation for this year includes AS 91057 L1 Tech and AS91629 L3 DVC to be ready in Nov.

Relief/Absence

Last year I was caught out a culpa times so to help You will need to develop a unit of work, or 2, which can be taught in an ordinary classroom with a data projector by any relief/cover teacher so that if you have to be away for family reasons or are suddenly sick or otherwise incapacitated your classes can be covered. I would like you to give me a copy of these gems or email me the links on the network/google doc, so I can give them to a reliever and I can keep a record of which class has had which material. If know you are going to be away let Linda know asap and please leave relief as mentioned earlier. The students are quite willing to carry on with their but its too risky for the relief teacher even one of us.

Travel

If you are doing stuff for the college or going anywhere on school business please book the car or other transport with Annie and let me know so I can check it on the expenditure statements.

Please use the order book, its in my office, write on the order form what the expenditure is for (class level) and please return it.

We will try and meet monthly around the 20 somethingth @ 3.15 in 207 we will set a night when people know what they are doing.

Make sure you have your goals set for 2016.

Room 207/208

Ash has all her classes timetabled in 207, we have also 208 timetabled if we want. If you want 207 or 208 when Ash has anything on negotiate with her. Get in today and let Paul know if you want 207 at another time

Put covers on the desk if your students are cutting in room 208. Anything else? add it to this doc :-)

Visitors from Taihape Area School visiting 4.30pm Tuesday

Thanks

Ant
