Observation 26.2.16 Cooking

- Students come in and put on their aprons (2:05)

- Teacher tells students that this lesson is about following instructions: Instructions are written in the wrong order, so that they must read their instructions

- Teacher reminds the students that they need to listen, stops the student when she can hear that someone is talking while she is talking

- She tells them that she will be his partner next

- Students are quiet and attentive

- Teacher uses physical items to cue the students

- teacher stops the class when she notices legs are moving. She insists they stop moving and keep their feet still while they listen

- teacher asks the students where the noise level is

- she re-iterates the rules: what happens if we eat??

- Teacher tells them they can get going: students all move around gathering their equipment

- Teacher pulls aside a student and asks them “what did I say”

- She reminds them, first chance. (2:16)

- Student has a loud outburst, teacher walks right into his space and reminds him again

- students are chatty but gathering cooling ingredients

- teacher walks around the room and follows the students around

- teacher stops students and shows a demonstration

- names, names, names

- Teacher has to get another student back into the circle

- she reminds him this is his second warning, “you know what happens when it gets to three.”

- Student complies

- Teacher talks, students are completely silent

- Teacher reminds students that cooking last period is a treat. If the student has a problem they need to sort it out after class

- Large demonstration of what the process looks like step by step: students are watching, teacher stops to remind students of their focus and of following instructions

- Students go off to work (2.:26)

- teacher is reminding students of their expectations, stands at the pilot table and guides them for their ingredient gathering

- ALL STUDENTS ENGAGED AND ON TASK

- Calm atmosphere, students happy

- Teacher strolls around the class checking up on the students

- Student is playing drums with his rolling pin, teacher calls him over and takes the rolling pin.

- Student was looking at the teacher waiting for her to see him

- Teacher asks for classes attention, waiting for the students to listen

- one more demonstration

- teacher monitors the class, asks students why they are wandering and quickly sends them back on task

- plenty of encouragement and reminders :get food in the oven in 4 minutes

- telling the students they are doing a good job

- 2:36 students are putting their food in the oven, teacher helps them and makes sure the process is safe

- students are getting noisier as the cleaning portion of the lesson begins

- students are being hurried along and faced to get their food in on time

- A student is up to his last warning for making loud silly noises

- He quietens down and continues working

- Students are generally working and going well with their cooking. Happy atmosphere in the class, working and pacing

- Teacher is helping groups that are behind

- All students are cleaning. Teacher checks that the food is in the oven

- 2:43 teacher gathers attention with the arm in the air, asking students to sit down and listen. She gives them good time to listen and asks for listening

- teacher keeps reminding the students they need to do what they are told

- a student on his last warning gets told that that is it. he knows what happens. he is told to sit on a chair away from the rest of the students and is waiting for his consequence

- teacher always reminding them to listen and focus

- teacher reminds them that they need to keep in control and work well until the end of the lesson

- student sits in the corner misses out on the food

- food is cooking, the class is cleaning. the students are working well and cleaning up

- teacher monitors the cleaning and puts away ingredients and extra while the class clean as well

- teacher checks the students off, when they are ready they wait at their tables with bags for the food they are making

- students are working well and cleaning well. lovely lively atmosphere, respectful

- teacher is telling the students the last instructions, students interrupt but she will not speak if the other students are talking

- student gets a warning (3:01) 4 minutes till the end of the lesson

- bell rings, teacher dismisses each group

- students wait behind desks

- student who has sent to the naughty chair sits and is called over by the teacher

- teacher talks to the students after class and goes over the expectations again

- she tells him once more breaking 3 rules, then there will be a bigger punishment next time

- this is the last large warning

- teacher walks to last group and says goodbye, lesson ends and the students leave
