For the first day of our holidays the whole staff went to see Nathan Mikaere Wallis present speak about brain development.
His descriptions of how the brain develops and works were easy to follow and understand. In terms of a speaker he was fantastic. Engaging, funny and clear, the day went quickly and was enjoyable.
The main points I took away from this day was:
- Teenagers do not have access to a large part of their logical / rational brain during their adolescent years. This causes their mood swings, irrational behaviours and emotionally driven reactions
- Peoples brains are 'programmed' during their first 3 years of life. This is an important time in their development that is very difficult to be re-wired. This describes alot of my students difficult behaviour.
