We are very close to the end of term, and the Year 11's are further behind than last years year 11's.
This is a very difficult issue to combat, as half of them do not do homework, and now the rate of absences is on the rise. Students who were supposed to be getting their credits from internals earlier in the year are still working on these.
I have a plan. Although this year there were large interruptions - that in effect pulled us 1 month behind the schedule I visualised at the start of the year - next year for the first project I will make sure:
- That each week a research goal is reached. So that means that the research project will only take 3 weeks instead of 4
- We will do more activities in class together to get them on their way with concepts
- More checkpoints - hand in what they have. Not so much me waiting for them to get the work done
- Their final designs will be on Sketchup. I pushed for development to be on the computer, but I do not think that this was a good use of time, especially becuase alot of them had never used Sketchup before.
Why do they not feel the pressure!? So relaxed, so easy going goshdarn.
It is important to set them up 'quickly' at the start of the year so that they can better use their time now. The presentation project also took too long. I would like to give them a personal critique of their designs, so maybe a mid-topic checkpoint where they print what they have and I highlight some of the alignment / colour / legibility issues for them as they cannot see these.
