A boy in my tutor group is interested in becoming a builder.
I was shocked to discover that he had no idea what Placemakers, Bunnings, ITM and Hammer Hardware sold!! It is so strange to think that some kids have these dreams and yet have no real concept of what is involved, or the greater sense of associated stuff that goes with it.
This young man was interested in getting a job. I gave all the students a CV template, and this particular student has been sending me edits and requests for comments for at least 2 months. The trickiest thing he has had to face is the section "What I have to offer". Here, I have said that they need to put 5x bullet points about their personal qualities that would make them a good employee.
Kids find this really hard to do, and I totally underestimated how tricky this section would be. I am enjoying helping this kid who normally I do not have much to do with / much in common with by helping him with a goal he is motivated to achieve AND motivated intrinsically with.
I am thinking about taking him into the shops to have a look around and taking him to introduce him to the shop owners and maybe when his CV is done, taking him in to hand in his CV.
Below, is the template for the CV:
