Because of last years low marks in the freehand sketching standard, I have started the kids off with an exercise where they are sketching a craft knife. They were asked to sketch the following images:

- Isometric

- Oblique

- 2D views

- Exploded

- In use (blade out with an arrow)

- Craft knife with a hand on it so that there is proportion

- Craft knife with measurements

- Section cut of the craft knife to show the inside construction

- Rendered craft knife / colour OR black and white

- Title

These are the views required for an Excellence level mark in the external freehand sketching. Most of the kids got at least the section cut and measured rendered version of the design done. This was a good exercise as I walked around the class and gave the kids practice marks. Also, I have told the students that they must keep this page of drawings and use it to reference the requirements of their sketching for when they are drawing their own ideas on paper.
