We took a trip to Wellington so that the kids could draw some buildings, and gain inspiration from the land and the city. This is a good approach for Ideation, as the general approach to Ideation comes from students looking up imagery on the internet, and sketching ideas that they have only seen online. It is important to give the kids an experience, as it helps them with their starting point for a genuine design.
We went to the locations identified on the above map. We went to each building and spent a moment there drawing and discussing the buildings: What era they maybe from, what the design features are, why the designer used certain materials etc. This is a good way to get to understand what the students know, and what gaps they have in their knowledge.
The kids seemed to appreciate a day out and it was great to see them creating images from the real life situation we were in. There were some awesome sketches coming through and the general level of enthusiasm was high and energetic. I really enjoyed this relaxed day, and it was lovely to see the students enjoying themselves.
Since we have come back to school, we have used these sketches to begin the ideation process. The three boys that were previously dis-engaged with their work are now working at a good rate as today we did some exercises together (I did them too around a table with them) and I asked them to keep to the same speed as me. The boys made some concepts pretty much immediately, and I think they were pleased with themselves as they had produced more work than they had previously.
Overall, and, as always, EOTC experiences are the best and charge up the creative fuel tank.
